Project led by : Benjamin Deruelle
One of the three corpuses of the Sapientia project consists of military treatises written or published in Western Europe (Italy, France, Spain, England, the Netherlands, the Holy Roman Empire) from the middle of the 15th century to the end of the 18th century. These documents often also contain illustrations that explain the text, showcase the authors’ ideas, and inform the readers on what actions they are to learn and undertake. Some of these treatises are already digitized and available via private or public platforms, in the digital collections of libraries and archives such as Gallica or the British Library, but we will also digitize other manuscripts or rare books. Their integration into our data infrastructure will not only give researchers around the world access to priceless sources for the history of warfare in modern times, but will furthermore allow us to make a significant contribution to the study of the circulation of military knowledge in Europe, and across the “Republic of Military Letters” that arose in this era.
